Dual Language

Inspiring Bilingual Scholars with a Foundation in Faith

At Redeemer Christian Academy, our Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program is designed to cultivate bilingual, bi-literate, and culturally competent students who are prepared to thrive in an interconnected, global society. Rooted in our Christian values, the program nurtures language development while empowering students to embrace diverse cultures with compassion and curiosity.

Program Model: A 90:10 Two-Way Immersion Approach

Redeemer’s DLIP follows a two-way, 90:10 immersion model. Our classrooms include both native English and native Spanish speakers learning together in a mutually supportive environment. In Kindergarten, instruction begins with 90% Spanish and 10% English, with English increasing by 10% each year. By 4th grade, students receive 50% instruction in each language, promoting balanced development of both languages.

Our model emphasizes Content-Based Instruction (CBI)—students learn academic subjects through the target language, which builds vocabulary, language structure, and critical thinking. CBI is a powerful tool to ensure language acquisition happens alongside academic mastery, without duplicating content.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How does the program work?

A: Spanish is the primary language of instruction in the early grades. English literacy skills are introduced strategically and increase over time. Teachers use visual aids, music, movement, and hands-on activities to ensure students understand academic content. Students learn in Spanish—not by translation—and gradually apply the knowledge across both languages.

Q: What if my child doesn’t speak Spanish?

A: Children have a natural ability to acquire languages at a young age. Our teachers create immersive, engaging environments using songs, visuals, and storytelling. Structured peer interaction and presentation opportunities build comfort and fluency over time.

Q: When will my child become bilingual?

A: Full bilingualism typically takes 5–7 years in an immersive setting. Students who continue in DLIP through elementary and middle school will begin to demonstrate advanced proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing by high school.

Q: Will there be native Spanish speakers in the classroom?

A: Yes. Redeemer aims for a 50:50 ratio of native English and native Spanish-speaking students. This balance maximizes peer learning and language exposure. However, class composition may range from 50:50 to 70:30 depending on enrollment, without negatively impacting instruction.
